Review of Familusi Olusesan's African Culture and the Status of Women: The Yoruba Example

Familusi addresses the issues concerning African women from a holistic view in this study. He narrates that numerous scholarly studies have portrayed women to be at the receiving end of religion, cultural, political and economic domination. He countered this notion with discovery that women’s encounters in the aforementioned are not entirely true as they enjoy some inalienable benefits in the society.

He clamors that the values that infringe against the rights of women be discarded, yet the protection of significant African values be encouraged and not destroyed in the name of civilization. Further, He drives home his analysis about women through the door of the Yoruba culture, discussing the rights of women and in the same light, manifestation of gender discrimination in the cultural context.
