Odunbaku traces the background of the Isale people in this study. According to him, the tribal marks on their face reveal their ancestors are from Oyo even though the people claim to be Egba. It is to this end that he embarks on this research to affirm the use of tribal marks in tracing the root lands of Isale settlement before it was abandoned. This scores Odunbaku an early point in this study by establishing that a major purpose of tribal marks is for cultural identity.
