1 INTRODUCTION
According to Peterson, Albaum, and Kozmetsky (1986), a small business is one which is in-dependently owned and operated, and which is not dominant in its field of operation. Small businesses are characterized by a flat organizational hierarchy and close proximity to co-workers, which is believed to contribute to effective communication practices. Hair and Beauty Saloon, Hatfield is a makeup saloon that specializes in skin care, facial makeup, hair styling and selling of beauty products. It was formerly a resource centre for Christian materials and had a section for doing hair but was changed fully to a beauty salon. Since its establishment 2 years ago, it has earned its reputation for offering good services in clean and hygienic area for the people living around Hatfield. They operate 6 days a week from 10am-7pm and currently has 6 people working as full time and 1 driver who works as part time. The firm was established with the vision of serving customer with good quality hair and beauty services, with great hospitality together with the expectation of making maximum profit.
For the purpose of this project, ‘’ HAIR AND BEAUTY SALOON’’ will be used as a case study to match small business practise with academic theories. The operations, issues and intended plans of the business will be analysed in detail as regards to the theories applied in each area of the business.
