A Case Study of the Effects of Boko Haram on the people of Chibok Community of Borno State, Maiduguri - North Eastern Nigeria, West Africa (Life as Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and needs for re-migration/return)

Abstract:

There are many reasons why People are forced to leave their places of origins to seek refuge elsewhere. Some chose to reside within the same country and become Internally Displaced. While others end up across borders in other countries as refuges. The reasons for leaving their initial places of residence could be as a result of natural occurrences such as flood, drought, diseases or famine etc., or violent armed conflicts; such as war, communal clashes and terrorism etc. similarly, at the eventual end of the situation, the choices made to return could either be voluntarily or assisted in nature. The research takes a closer look into the problems and expectations of Internally Displaced Persons in North Eastern Nigeria using Chibok Community as a Case study. The members of Chibok community were forced to leave their community due to the activities of the terror group ‘Boko haram’. Displacement and efforts to return poses challenges to the Internally Displaced Person (IDPs) as well as the countries in which they are situated. The research explore some of these challenges among the displaced members of Chibok community in Nigeria. Through phone Interviews, the research tries to identify some of the key issues of concern to the community that could be considered in voluntary or assisted efforts towards reintegration/migration.
