ABSTRACT
This study critically examines the implications of brain drain on national security which is centred on Nigeria and covering the period 1999 to 2010. The study utilised qualitative research method to present data, and in particular, the narrative and descriptive techniques to analyse the data. The crux of the study explored the reasons and implications of the emigration of Nigeria’s professionally skilled citizens for a better working and dwelling environment despite her endowed wealth of resources believed to be sufficient to cater for every Nigerian. The study made use of primary and secondary sources. The primary source was obtained through interviews and secondary source was from textbooks, journals, internet materials and periodicals (newspaper). The key finding of the study revealed that Nigerians are part of the development process in the advanced nations such as United States of America, Western and Eastern Europe. However, Nigeria is still struggling to attain appreciable development with her abundant natural and human resources. The study further revealed that, Brain drain in Nigeria is due to the inability of the government to harness her resources (human and natural) adequately and direct them towards national development. This is reflected in her poor welfare packages, social amenities, shaky economy, and weak political institutions. This has created implications to the pursuit of national security. To effectively nip the brain drain phenomenon in the bud, the study suggested that the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) should initiate programs to engage skilled professionals actively on a temporary or permanent basis to contribute effectively in technological advancement. In addition, the hardship experienced by returnees in search of jobs and business opportunities should be mitigated. Also, FGN should reduce the overdependence on oil so as to create opportunities to boost other sectors to engage Nigerians actively within and outside Nigeria. Finally, the social amenities, creation of jobs and business opportunities should be a top priority of the government in order to have an enabling environment to attain formidable national security.
