THE EFFECTS OF TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT ON FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE IN KANO SMALL AND MEDIUM ENTERPRISES (SMEs)

Abstract

Training and Development are essential factors in financial performance. If small and medium enterprises are concerned to achieve a better and improved financial performance levels, the owner/managers should preferably focus on effective training and development for the achievement of their firm`s goal. The broad objective of the study is to assess the effects of training and development on financial performance on Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Kano metropolis. Hence, a survey was adopted for the study and a sample size of 214 Manufacturing SMEs was selected using Krejcie and Morgan (1970) formula. The survey yielded a usuable response rate of 85%. Data was generated using well-structured five-point Likert’s scale questionnaire. Questionnaire was summarized using tables with frequency and percentage and Spearman’s rank correlation analysis was used to test the hypotheses stated with help of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS version 20). The findings revealed that there is a weak positive significant relationship between training and development on financial performance among SMEs in Kano Metropolis. The study recommends that SMEs in Kano Metropolis should make training and development of their employees a regal and also to improve on the welfare of employee.
