An analysis of NGOs and humanitarian situation in the North east Nigeria

Abstract

A Research was conducted in North Eastern Nigeria to analyse the NGOs and Humanitarian

situation in the region with emphasis on Borno, Adamawa and Yobe States. Simple random

sampling was adopted to analyse selected NGOs. 15 NGOs were selected at random from the study

area. Data were analyse for this study with descriptive statistical tools using frequency count and

percentages on answering research questions. The study revealed that the most of the NGOs are

international Organisations (73%) and intervening in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe States. This is

because Nigeria as a developing nation lacks the financial capacity to solve the humanitarian

needs of the people affected by the crises in the north east without International Organisations’

intervention. The sector with majority of actors is Protection (60%) while the telecommunication

sector remain a gap as only one agency is responsible to it. (7%). The frequency and the

percentage exceeded normal. This because there is a serious duplications of assistance by the

agencies. The humanitarian situation in the North East is also getting better because as of April,

the United Nations and humanitarian partners reached 1,600,000 people with humanitarian

assistance. Despite the skepticism, NGOs have made lives better in the North East especially in

Borno Adamawa and Yobe states by alleviating suffering and quick response to cases as a result

of the crises. The Humanitarian situations are getting better as more international and national

NGOs are intervening in various aspects. Provided the efforts by the NGOs, there are still gaps in

some sectors such as emergency telecommunications, Camp Coordination and Camp management

and Sanitation especially environmental sanitation because of high cases of open defecations in a most of the LGAs
