ABSTRACT
This study intended to assess the contribution of the Teacher Development and Management Strategy (TDMS) to the retention of teachers in secondary schools in Tanzania. The sample of the study comprised 80 respondents including Educational officials, School inspectors, heads of schools, and classroom teachers in Kondoa District. Focus group discussions, questionnaires, interviews and documentary reviews were the methods used to collect data. The study adopted a descriptive technique in analyzing, presenting, and discussing the data collected through interviews and focused group discussion. The data collected through questionnaires were analyzed by using the SPSS software (Version 16) to get frequencies and percentages. Findings of the study revealed that there are strategies that are used to retain teachers in secondary schools and that the strategies are known to administrators, such as district officials and heads of schools. The study further showed that to some extent, the strategies in place help to retain teachers. However some of the teachers are dissatisfied in areas included in the strategies. This means that implementation of the strategies is not 100% successful.
