ASSESSING THE BENEFITS OF STUDENT-CENTERED INSTRUCTIONAL APPROACH IN TEACHING HOME-ECONOMICS STUDENTS. A CASE STUDY OF THREE (3) SELECTED SENIOR HIGH SCHOOLS IN THE TAMALE METROPOLIS

ABSTRACT

This research sought to assessing the benefits of student-centered instructional approach in teaching Home – Economics students with specific reference to three (3) public Senior High Schools in the Tamale Metropolis of the Ghana Education Service namely: Seventh-Day Adventist Senior High School, Ghana Senior High School and Kalpohini Senior High School as the target population. The entire research focused on the benefits of the student-centered instructional approach to evaluate their impact on teaching home-economics students who undergo a number of practical lessons. The methodology used for the study was quantitative survey with a population of thirty (30) respondents the three selected public senior high schools using home economics teachers, heads of departments and assistant headmasters. The sampling technique used in the selection of the respondents was the purposive non-probability sampling. Survey and Interview were the main data collection instrument used. Data was analysed using the SPSS and Microsoft Excel. The findings revealed that, through the student-centered instruction, students get motivated to listen, learns and participates fully in the teaching and learning process as well as enabling them to learn and share ideas in groups with their classmates. The study recommended that, all homeeconomics teachers adopt the student-centered instructional approach in assigning group works, projects, assignments, higher order thinking, comprehension and 

application.
