ABSTRACT
The study assesses the nutritional status of pregnant women in Odorkor. It was designed to specifically assess the knowledge of pregnant women with regards to the nutritional requirements during pregnancy, identify the frequency of various nutritional intake among pregnant women, inquire into the effect of malnutrition among pregnant women and identify measures to improve the nutritional status of pregnant women in Odorkor. The study was designed as a quantitative survey. The study selected 250 pregnant women from the population of 500 women, representing 50% of the population plus 28 health workers. An analysis of the survey revealed that the consumption of carbohydrate or the energy giving foods was generally good as these food groups are popular staples in the country. The consumption of protein and fats and oil was not as good as the consumption of carbohydrate foods. The study further revealed that the consumption of cassava, yam, plantain and cocoyam was very popular among the pregnant women. According to the analysis from the study, clinics or community health centers were the primary institutions where most pregnant women obtained nutrition information. From the study, consumption of protein foods is a real public health challenge for community health nurses to address. Finally, the study concludes that while the intake of vitamin-mineral supplement, taking of caffeinated drinks was not regarded as effective measure that prevent malnutrition among pregnant women, others, such as the consumption of adequate amounts of high fiber foods and the intake of enough calories could improve the nutritional status of, pregnant women. The study therefore recommends that pregnant women should be taught the practical means of preparing and eating balanced diet. Also, pregnant women should be educated on the effects of the consumption of alcohol and caffeinated drinks to avoid complications during pregnancy
