Assessing the Significance of UN SDG15 and the Effect of Forest Carbon Sinks on Food and Nutrition Security in Baringo County Kenya

Abstract:

The collective efforts made through Development Studies to mitigate natural resource-based conflict like those associated with the environment serve the purpose of improving the good quality of human life. Good quality lifestyle is demonstrated through global, regional, national food and nutrition security. Moreover, it extends to water safety that involves climate change mitigation, enhances societal peace and security of having access to natural resources, additionally, education and health resources should be the fundamentals of International Relations studies and sustainable development that will help achieve the good quality of human life. Global environmental challenges like deforestation, associated desertification, loss of botanical, and zoological species are linked with man-made activities. Floods, droughts, landslides, insect infestations, forest fires, and other natural disasters have been projected by environmental scientists to obstruct agricultural development which would contribute to feeding close to 9,000,700,000 people by the year 2050. Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 15 main objective, is to secure, rehabilitate and create awareness of the sustainable use of the earth’s ecosystems. This can be achieved through taking care of forests sustainably, controlling desertification, undoing the damage caused by environmental degradation, and halting the loss of biodiversity. Therefore, the purpose of the study focuses on SDG 15 management of forests, with the main objective of identifying forests carbon sinks with their important role in controlling climate change and directly influencing Kenya’s food and nutrition security, specifically in Baringo County, Kenya. Food and nutrition security is a top-listed item on Kenya’s Agenda Four’s national development plan. By 2017 agriculture had contributed towards 31.5% of the GDP, man-made activities like the clearing of forests, improper land use exacerbated climate changes, and increasingly erratic weather frequencies. This unpredictable weather resulted in a flooding crisis evident in Kenya’s Rift Valley area, particularly in the Lake Baringo Drainage Basin region. With the advent of the corona pandemic, science and technological applications should be studied in using forests to harness oxygen examined through photosynthetic mechanisms which directly benefits humans, plant, animals, and insects’ food and nutrition security systems. A holistic approach towards sustainable development such as The Human Development and Capability approach will be the best way in achieving this ambitious scientific goal.
