Assessment Of Factors Influencing Job Satisfaction Among Nurses At The Greater Accra Regional Hospital

ABSTRACT

Background:

Job satisfaction is one of the most important components that can impact on productivity and performance in an organization. Nursing job satisfaction is critical since it enhances commitment, retention and turn over which subsequently, influence the quality of care and patient satisfaction.

Objective:

This study investigated factors associated with job satisfaction among nurses at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, Ghana. Methods: Descriptive cross-sectional study with quantitative method was applied. Structured questionnaires were used with 233 nurses as sample size. Data collection was carried out using simple random sampling technique. Statistical analysis of data was done by using Stata V15. Descriptive analysis was carried out and linear regression model was used to establish association and test strength of associations respectively.

Results:

Overall, there was low job satisfaction 2.9 (SD=0.6) among the nurses at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital.There was low satisfaction with regards to the policies concerning nurses 2.9 (SD=0.7), promotion 2.8 (SD=0.9) and motivation 2.7 (SD=0.9) with remuneration 2.3 (SD=0.8) recording the least. However, there was high satisfaction with teamwork 3.3 (SD=0.7) and supervision 3.6 (0.5). Age, marital status, years of experience, years of practice at Greater Accra Regional Hospital, position/rank, and the nature of the ward heaviness were significantly (p < 0.001) related to job satisfaction among the nurses. Conclusion: The study revealed that there was low job satisfaction among nurses at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital. While the nurses were not satisfied with most of the organizational factors, there was high satisfaction with the level of supervision and teamwork. With the nurses‟ factors, it was concluded that age, marital status, years of experience, years of practice, position/rank, and the nature of the ward were significantly related to job satisfaction among the nurses. Based on the conclusions, recommendations made were to relook at the policies regarding nurses at the hospital, including promotion, motivation and remuneration. Nurses should be involved in decision-making processes. Further studies have been recommended toward determining the quality of care at the hospital.
