ABSTRACT
The study assesses the factors influencing self employment perceptions and
attitudes among graduate in Tanzania using the University of Dodoma as the case.
It assumes that students’ perceptions and attitudes toward self employment
influence their practices toward being employed or self-employed. Thus, the study
aimed on assessing the factors influencing self employment perceptions and
attitudes.
Literatures show that, graduates were interested to be employed on large firms.
On the other hand, students with experience of self employment show more
preference be involved on self employment. The role of family background,
degree program, peer groups, socio demographic characteristics was little covered
in the literature. Therefore, a survey was conducted in the University of Dodoma
to assess these factors.
The study was conducted at the University of Dodoma. A total of 98 students
were surveyed. Simple random sampling was adopted to select students to be
included in the study. Chi-square test was performed to assess the factors
influencing self employment perceptions and attitudes.
Analysis from chi-square shows that the influence of peer groups and sex of the
respondents toward self employment perceptions and attitudes was statistically
significant. The study concluded that, peer groups and sex of the respondents are
the major factor influencing self employment perceptions and attitudes. Owing to
the influence of peer groups in enhancing self employment perceptions and
attitudes, establishing self employments clubs in the universities will help to
increase self employment perceptions and attitudes among graduates in Tanzania.
