ABSTRACT
This study, on the assessment of factors that influence the use of modern contraceptives was carried out in North A District of Unguja. The study involved three villages namely Mkwajuni, Kivunge and Kibeni. Face to face questionnaires and focus group discussion were used in data collection. The quantitative data obtained were analyzed by using SPSS and qualitative data was analyzed using content analysis. The study findings indicate that, majority of the respondents (60.1%) did not use modern contraceptives. Furthermore, field results have reveaedl that, the most widely used methods of contraceptives were condoms (40.9%). The reasons that resisted for using modern contraceptives to married people in North A District of Unguja were more concerned with their health as they believed that, modern contraceptives had a severe side effects associated with them, such as abnormal pain, cancer and over bleeding during menstruation cycle. Religious beliefs and husband‘s approval were other reasons that affecting the use of modern contraceptives. The study concludes that, Most of the programs like ZAC and MCHclinics played a great role for visiting the areas for promoting the use of modern contraceptives. Therefore, it is recommends that, the institutions/programs and facilities should work hard to clarify all rumors on modern contraceptive services especially the health issues or side effects, This could be done through increasing capacities for dialogs, on the benefits of the services at family level, which seemed to be effective. An adequate and accurate information also should be provided to all users concerning the modern contraceptives methods, and more advice should be given to vi encourage them to seek health advices at any time, when they encounted problems associated with the use of modern contraceptive methods
