Association of Glutathione –S Transeferese Theta 1 Null Polymorphism among Sudanese Patients with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia

The GSTT1 is play a crucial function in the detoxification of both endogenous and exogenous carcinogens and also participate in the activation and inactivation of oxidative metabolites of carcinogenic compounds so that to protect DNA from oxidative damage. Hence, it has been speculated that GSTs were probably involved in the development of cancers. The objective of this study to investigate the association of null glutathione S-transeferase theta 1 (GSTT1) genotype among patients with chronic myeloid leukemia This case control study was carried out in Khartoum state in radio isotope center of Khartoum during aperiod of time from February 2015 to December 2015. From 50 CML patients and 30 healthy individuals; 2.5 ml of venous blood samples was collected, the DNA extracted from the blood samples and amplified in PCR machine by using GSTT1 primer, by using gel electrophoresis.

Results: The GSTT1 null polymorphism was detected in 50% of CML patients who were tested in this study, while it was 16.7% in the control group and the difference was statistically significant (OR=5.0,CI=2.45, P= 0.003). In summary we concluded that there is a significant association between GSTT1 null polymorphism and CML.
