ABSTRACT
Background: Diarrhoea disease remains one of the major causes of child morbidity and mortality in the world. Globally, Diarrhoea kills an estimated 2.5 million people each year, with about 60-70% of them being under five children. Diarrhoea disease is any disease by which a person experiences passage of loose or watery stools at least three times a day, characterized by increase in volume, fluidity or frequency of bowel movement relative to the usual pattern for a particular person Objectives: The objectives of this study was to identify care givers knowledge, practices and challenges faced on the management of Diarrhoeal disease in under five children in Bushenyi district. Methods: This study employed a community-based cross sectional study design that employed quantitative approach to collect data. A semi structured questionnaire was used to collect information from 52 household respondents. Data was analyzed using EPI info (exe) version 7 computer statistical package in order to give a statistical meaning to the data.
Results: This Study show that a significant number of care givers (38%) did not have knowledge on what Diarrhoea disease means and most likely, although the source of information on Diarrhoea among most (54%) care givers was health workers. 73.1% of the care givers feed their children during Diarrhoea episodes and the most preferred food among care givers who feed their children was porridge (39.5%). The study findings show that 32.7% of care givers lack money for transport and payment for treatment, medicine stock outs 57.6% and early departure of health workers (21.2%) was the main problems faced.
Conclusion/recommendation: most of the caregivers in Bwatogo community are not knowledgeable on the management of Diarrhoeal disease. The health care stakeholders should train, encourage and empower community health workers to provide continuous health education to mothers on Diarrhoea prevention and control.
