Causes, Severity And Early Treatment Outcome Of Traumatic Brain Injury Among Patients Admitted Atiiringa And Dodoma Regional Referral Hospital Tanzania

ABSTRACT

Background: Traumatic brain Injuries represent a significant cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, road traffic accident accounting a significant proportion of these injuries. However access to neurological care is poor in low income Countries including Tanzania.

Objective: To determine the causes, severity and early treatment outcome of TBI among patient admitted at Iringa and Dodoma regional referral hospitals, Tanzania

Methodology: Cross-section, prospective study, Study, which includes all patients admitted in ICU, surgical, orthopedic and traumatic departments at IRRH and DRRH

Result: A total of 172 patients were recruited in the study .Nearly three quarters (73.8%) were male, and the most common affected age group was 19 – 50ysr .MTA causes majority of case of TBI (63.4%) .with large proportion (49.4%) having mild TBI while 11.62% TBI .Majority 66.27% need medical treatment . and (74%) TBI patients had good recovery at 2-3days post treatment, the lowest (4.68%) was referred to referral hospital for further treatment and mortality rate was (19.76%),

Conclusions: Road traffic accident is a public health problem in Tanzania, causing sygnificant morbility. A total of 172 patients had TBI ,74% had good recovering ,19.76% were died and 4.68% reffered for further treatment . Its therefore important to reinforce preventive measures for road traffic accident .Also there a need to develop and implement pre hospital and hospital management of traumatic brain injury .
