Challenges confronting dual career women

ABSTRACT

This study was designed to investigate the challenges confronting dual career women of FUNAAB, Specifically, the study investigated the challenges confronting dual career women at work and at home, causes of these challenges, and how they have being coping with the challenges. The study also explored the opinions of men on how women can cope with dual-career challenges. The population of who was made up of about one thousand five hundred (1500) male and female staff, both teaching and non teaching staff working in Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta.

The study adopted a descriptive survey design, to ensure 40% representation of respondents from the selected Colleges/Centers in the study sample. The simple random method (balloting) was used to select five out of nine colleges; the centers were selected using a deliberate sampling method. At the College/Centre level, convenience sampling method was adopted to include willing male and female staff as participants in the study. The sample comprised of two hundred staff (200) of which 75% were female staff and 25% male staff. A well-structured questionnaire was used for data collection and data was analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 16 and the    in-depth interviews were analyzed using the content validity method.

The findings of these study reveals that majority, 72(52.9%) of the respondents agreed that dual career women often experience stress in balancing work-family role, also majority 84(61.8%)agreed that elderly family member require additional care, the obligation to meet their needs can influence family roles and create inter-role conflict. Majority of the respondents 103(75.7%) agreed that in coping with dual career challenges they make God the foundation of their family and career. Some recommendations were made for dual career women most especially mothers on how to manage their career and home so as not to allow their work affect their home in a negative way and vice-versa.
