Challenges Faced In Education Provision For The Mentally Handicaped Children In Nyagachi Zone, Nyamira District Kenya

ABSTRACT

The research study was conducted to investigate challenges ftJced in education

provision for the mentally hamfspped learners in an inclusive setting in

Nyagachi Zone, Nyamim Division, Nyamira District. The researcher used survey

on teachers teaching in regular schools in Nyagachi Zone, where questionnaires

were used to collect inti'Jrmation about problems mentally hanaspped learners

face in an Inclusive set up in the zone.

The researcher targel:Ed 17 primary schools in Nyagachi zone which was not

easier for the research to gather inliJrmation within limited time and resources.

The researcher decided to sample six schools out of 17 schools by using landom

sampling where all schools in the zone had a chance to be sampled.

Research findings schools that most of the teachers handling Mentally

hanaspped learners are trained and others are undergoing special training

progmms.

It was realizes from the data collected that learners with mental retardation are

labeled that like, Kiziwi {deaf} kiwete {afpple} and are neglected.

Researr:h findings showed that some of the courses of mental retardation is

caused by accidents, diseases, heredity and prolonged use of drugs.

The research found out that challenges ftJced by the mentally has been done.

The special units should be established somehow closer to on another to avoid

late ness, irregularity in class attendance. The educational cuniaJ/um and

materials should be moatfied to suit the mental handicaps to arouse interest and

attention span in order to complete a certain academic level with skills for mture

career.

From the research findings the researcher recommends that; more teachers to

be trained on special needs education so that more units to be estabrlShed to

avoid tong walking distance and irregularity in class attendance.

Once or sometime a year assessment services should be done near the w1lages

for those who are far to be able to reach. Also create awareness to parents with special needs Jeamers to be actively involved in helping these children.
