Challenges Facing The Education Of Hearing Impairments Learners In Schools In Masinga Division, Yatta District, Kenya

ABSTRACT

The research topic was on challenges facing the education of the hearing impaired

/earners in schools in Masinga Division. In chapter one, the researcher came up with

the statement of the problem and the objectives of the study. In chapter two -

literature review the researcher defined the term hearing impairment stated the

causes and the types of hearing impairment. In this chapter the researcher noted the

characteristics, which enables one to identify a learner with hearing impairment; this

chapter also stated what other people say about the hearing impaired both in Africa

and other countries of the world.

In chapter three the researcher used a descriptive design to collect data from

various respondents. Questionnaires were used which he sent to four head

teachers, eight teachers, eight parents and twenty learners.

In chapter four the four the researcher analyzed all responses from head teachers,

teachers parents and learners in tabular form. The researcher was to find out the

challenges facing the education of hearing impaired learners in schools within

Masinga Division. From the analysis it was shown that the enrolment of the four

schools was between 100 - 500 learners and all schools had enough teachers but

the teachers had no experience on how to handle learners with hearing impairment

except those teachers who are undergoing distance learning in special needs education.
