Child Protection and Livelihood of Somali Refugees in Nakivale Western Uganda

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to investigate child protection and livelihood of Somali refugees in nakivale camp, western Uganda. Hence it’s examined by identifying the level of awareness of the concept of chfld protection of refugee’s camp in nakivale, investigating the current status of refugee’s livelihood conditions and need for community in generally, and identifying the challenges that may face refugees community in Nakivale. In gathering information the research study employed both primary and secondary sources. The primary sources were distributed questionnaire, and interview; the secondary sources were the literature work and internet. This study employed descriptive survey design; the data were collected purposely from refugees in nakivale. In selecting the respondents and area of sample, the researcher used two sampling techniques; cluster sampling was used to select Nakivale refugees while purposive sampling was used to select the sample size of the target population. Questionnaire and interview from the respondents were engaged for data analysis using tables and charts. From the findings of the study it was exposed that the level of child protection and livelihood of Somali refugees was low leading to difficult condition on the current time with respect to basic needs, the researcher found that the protection and living condition of the refugees were far from the expectation of the external community, and social and economic factors were identified as the main obstacles in the refugees were lack of child protection and basic needs. The study recommends that The community must be given an awareness of child protection by humanitarian aid agency or other any organizations, these areas should be improved the lively hood conditions refugees like food, water shelter by UNHCR and Its fellow organizations and the government of the host country.
