Concentricism and Neo-colonialism: The African case

ABSTRACT

How to protect and balance their National interests and sovereignty in theface of Neo-colonialist tendencies and activities from Developed American, European and Asian Nations, has right from the period of decolonization in the early 1960s, been a problem to Africa and Her leaders. As these Nations, tend to continuously encroach on the sovereignty and domestic policies of African Nations.  Therefore, to take a foreign policy posture in the current global political scape that will ensure their sovereignties are protected and preserved and their foreign policiy objectives  reflect their domestic policies, without much interference from Advanced Nations, made African leaders to come together in search of Strategies against the strides of Neo-colonialism. Thisresulted in a paradigm shift concerning the relationship between African and other continents, as African leaders began to see the pressing need to look for a workable strategy that will encourage internal development all over the African continent. And despite the early efforts of Leaders like Nkurumah, Haile Selassie, Sekou Toure and others, Africa fell short of coming up with a workable international strategy to achieve their aim of having a pan-Africanist continent whereby Africa can have a concentric circle that will be Afro-centered.Thus, the aim of this paper, is to analyze the relationship between African States and Nations of first world continents like Europe and America. The paper attempts to bring together the concepts of "concentricism" and "Neo-colonialism" in a bid to understand how the "philosophy of Concentricism" works and if possible, establish "concentricism" as the best strategy available to African leaders in their fight against Neo-colonialist tendencies and activities from Industrializes European and American Nations.
