The conflict and insecurity in Nigeria, particularly in the North-East of the country, apart from Boko Haram terrorists and insurgents; is aggravated by other equally social menaces of kidnapping, banditry and cattle rustling among others. The impact of protracted conflict and insurgency has affected both human development and capital-infrastructural development with many people including women and children displaced in addition to being faced by humanitarian challenges of water, sanitation, hygiene, healthcare worsening, food insecurity, taking away of family livelihood among others. Since this conflict has a direct impact on human social development, the dominant view from development experts is that with the way things are going and if care is not taking Nigeria may not meet SDGs by the year 2030. Development experts have called for a greater political solution rather than military solutions being deployed to tackle the insurgency. What we have right now is the injection and geometrical increase in military investment with a little or arithmetical infusion of human capacity development support for victims of the conflict. Without continued investment in human development as a long-term strategic solution, focusing on short-term life saving humanitarian needs alone may not work. This has to be supported with medium-term development needs and ultimately, targeting long-term development priorities that will enable Nigeria to achieve SDGs 2030 and attain the African Union (AU) 2063.
