Sickle cell disease (SCD) remains a formidable challenge around the globe particularly in Nigeria, where prevalence is the highest in the world. The impact of the disease extends beyond the affected children and healthcare systems as mothers engage in a vicious cycle of emotional, medical, social and financial challenges while caring for their children. The aim of this study is to assess the coping strategies and health literacy of mothers towards sickle cell disease at selected health institutions in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The research employed a descriptive design and a convenient sampling technique was used to select mothers at hematology clinics, Ring Road State Hospital and Oni Memorial Children Hospital, Ibadan respectively. Data was collected by means of self-structured questionnaires.
A total of 100 questionnaires were distributed with 100% return rate. Descriptive analysis was done with Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 26.0 and results were presented in tables. Hypothesis was tested using Chi-square at p-value ≤ 0.05.
The findings revealed that 76.9% have high level of adaptive coping strategies. About 79% attributed sickle cell disease to a genetic factor. 83% admitted that enlightenment on sickle cell can improve their coping strategies and health literacy. Results of hypothesis revealed an association between coping strategies and health literacy of mothers. (X²=1, p-value =0.000)
In conclusion, with adequate understanding and use of health information, mothers can navigate the burdens of sickle cell disease effectively and cope better. It is recommended that consistent follow-ups through counselling is enforced to enhance regular visits to the hospital in times of sickle cell crisis. Peer support groups should be encouraged to reduce loneliness
and isolation associated with the emotional response of caring for children with sickle cell disease and more research studies should be conducted on similar topic in different settings.
