Correlation Between Psychological Boundaries And Marital Satisfaction Amongst Christian Couples In Nairobi County, Kenya

Abstract:

This study aimed to establish the correlation between psychological boundaries and marital satisfaction amongst Christian couples in the Kenyan context. The objectives that guided the study included identifying the psychological boundaries in marital relationships; assessing levels of marital satisfaction; determining the correlation between psychological boundaries and marital satisfaction; and evaluating the impact of psychological boundaries on marital satisfaction amongst Christian couples. The study adopted a quantitative correlational survey design, and collected data using purposive sampling. The study population comprised married Christian couples in Nairobi County, Kenya. The researcher administered the data collection electronically through a questionnaire that used the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale Short Form and the abbreviated Couples Satisfaction Index. The sample size consisted of 245 respondents. Data collected was analysed using descriptive statistics, Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient (r) and the Standardized Coefficient Beta (Std. 𝛽), utilising the SPSS software version 28.0. The study found a cohesion ratio of 5.72, a flexibility ratio of 4.31 and a circumplex total ratio of 4.81. The scores were above 1 suggesting healthier family system, and that these ratios are aspects of psychological boundary that influence and significantly predict marital satisfaction. The study found that 84% percent of the respondents reported marital satisfaction whilst 16% were dissatisfied.
