Determinants Of Sustainability Of Family Economic Empowerment Projects Undertaken By Child Welfare Society Of Kenya In Nairobi City County, Kenya

xii

ABSTRACT

As the basic social unit, the family requires protection to ensure that children grow in a well-rounded environment and that they achieve their potential. For this reason, Child Welfare Society of Kenya (CWSK) implements Family Economic Empowerment Projects (FEEPs) with an aim of economically empowering families and making them financially independent. This in turn results to prevention of family separation and breakdowns. However, according to several Annual Reports of CWSK, sustainability of these projects poses a challenge resulting to loss of money and other resources such as time. This study investigated what influences the sustainability of Family Economic Empowerment Projects (FEEPs) by Child Welfare Society of Kenya in Nairobi City County, Kenya; making them unsustainable and causing financial dependence by families. Unsustainable FEEPs also mean that the organization loses resources and the organizational goals are also not met. The main objective of this study was to establish the determinants of Sustainability of Family Economic Empowerment Projects by Child Welfare Society of Kenya. The specific objectives of the study were: finding out whether participation by beneficiaries influenced sustainability of Family Economic Empowerment Projects, establishing if monitoring and evaluation influenced sustainability of Family Economic Empowerment Projects, determining if expertise of beneficiaries influenced sustainability of Family Economic Empowerment Projects, and examining whether environmental factors influenced sustainability of Family Economic Empowerment Projects. Descriptive Research Design was used in the study; with a target population of 130 beneficiaries of the Family Economic Empowerment Projects. The sample size was 66 beneficiaries sampled through stratified random sampling method. Quantitative data was analyzed through descriptive statistics which included frequencies, percentages, means and standard deviations. To establish the relationship between the dependent and independent variables, multiple regression analysis was used while content analysis was used to analyze qualitative data. From the findings of the study, there was a significant relationship between Sustainability of FEEPs and the independent variables that were studied (which were Participation by beneficiaries, Monitoring and Evaluation, Expertise of beneficiaries and Environmental factors). The study recommended that there should be active and meaningful participation of the FEEP beneficiaries as well as adoption of Monitoring and Evaluation in the implementation of FEEPs. CWSK should also ensure that there is knowledge and skill building to the FEEP beneficiaries in order to make their FEEPs sustainable. In addition, CWSK should also advocate for measures that help in addressing the adverse effects that Environmental factors may have on FEEPs; for example by liaising with government and other organizations.
