ABSTRACT
A digitally controlled light dimmer circuit is based on the principle of power control using thyristor. The switch enables light from an electric bulb to be raised from full brilliance down or up to a high range of luminance.
Owning to its construction, adequate conservation of energy is achieved.
The circuit is made in various patterns depending on the manufacturer. Some have a rotary knob; some have milled edged control while others have a depressing switch or side control. The dimmer switch is suitable for controlling any home lighting using filament lamps such as main lighting in the living room and bed head fixed lighting. Other obvious uses are for TV bungers, show rooms, photographic and projection rooms, hospital wards and theaters. It can also be used as a night light in childrens bedroom. A dimmer switch can have a maximum rated voltage of approximately 200watts, 300watts, or 500watts. There are other varieties available having rating up to 5000watts. The 5000watt variety is commonly used in the home enabling multi-light fitting and groups of light to be controlled by one dimmer without risk of damaging it by over load.
