DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND CHILD WELFARE IN MUKONO DISTRICT, UGANDA

ABSTRACT

The study sought to examine domestic violence and child welfare in Mukono District,

Uganda. The study objectives were; to establish factors influencing domestic violence in

Mukono District, Uganda, to examine the challenges facing child welfare in Mukono District,

Uganda and to examine the relationship between domestic violence and child welfare in

Mukono District, Uganda. The study applied a cross-sectional research design to reflect

aspects of perception, feelings, experiences, facts and emotional feelings of the study

respondents in finding out the relationship between Domestic violence and child welfare in

Mukono District, Uganda. This is because the research questions that were generated

necessitate observing explanatory, descriptive and analytical aspects of the research. The

study population involved 58 participants where 28 local peasants, 15 probation officers and

15 local leaders in Mukono District, Uganda. A sample size of 50 respondents was

determined through purposive and random sampling methods. After collecting data, the

researcher organized well-answered questionnaire, data was edited and sorted for the next

stage. The data was entered in SPPS, analyzed and interpreted. The study findings revealed

that 4% of the respondents strongly disagreed, 14% of the respondents disagreed, 18% of the

respondents were not sure, 44% agreed and the remaining 20% of the respondents strongly

agreed that most violent people are able to control themselves not to abuse in public or in

front of other people, not to cause injuries. This implies that majority of the respondents were

of the view that there is a multitude of factors influencing domestic violence. The study

concludes that most violent people are able to control themselves not to abuse in public or in

front of other people, not to cause injuries where they will show and only to be abusive

within their family. The government and the policy makers should carry out gender

sensitization so as to prevent domestic violence. The government and policy makers should

educate the public on the dangers of Domestic violence.
