Drug Abuse In Public Secondary Schools In Wajir East District, Wajir County: Prevention And Intervention

ABSTRACT

Many Secondary schools face daily drug abuse related incidents by students. Drug abuse has led

to students' riots, boycotts, sit in and at times total destruction of school properties and in some

cases result in lives loss of students. This research seeks to develop prevention and intervention

strategies of curbing drug abuse in public secondary schools in Wajir East District, Wajir

County. The objectives of the study are to determine the types of drugs commonly abused, to

identify causes of drug abuse, to identify the drug related problems, and to find out various ways

and means used by stakeholders to control drug abuse in public secondary schools in Wajir East

District. A descriptive survey design approach will be used for the study. Purposive sampling

technique will be used to sample all the sixteen public secondary schools together with the

respondents who will be the 16 head teachers, 16 heads of guiding and counseling departments,

64 class teachers and 64 class secretaries in the sample schools. Data will be collected using

structured questionnaires, both open and closed ended as the research instruments which will be

administered by the researcher. Data collected will be analyzed using statistical package for

social scientists (SPSS) as an analytical tool and presented in form of tables, graphs and pie charts.
