Effect of bio-char feed inclusion on milk yield and composition of HF crossbreed dairy cows at JUCAVM dairy farm

ABSTRACT

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of inclusion of bio-char on milk yield and composition of dairy cows in the JUCAVM dairy farm. Ten milk samples (in three day interval for 30 days) were collected separately and aseptically from all treatments. The General Linear Model (GLM) procedure of SAS version 9.2 were used to analyze milk yield and composition traits by using treatments and parity as fixed effect. The results showed that, milk yield was not significantly affected (p>0.05) by inclusion of different proportion of bio-char in the feed of dairy cows. The average dry mater content of milk collected from 5% bio char, 2.5% bio char and control feed were 14.5, 11.3and 11.6 , respectively. The result showed that, there was significant (p0.05). In general, the result confirmed that inclusion of bio char in the feed of dairy cows below 5% does not affect both milk yield and composition. However, lactation stage of the cows should be strictly identified in addition to parity and blood levels.
