EFFECTIVE MANAGEMENT OF GOVERNMENT OWNED HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY A CASE STUDY OF ABIA STATE HOTEL LIMITED, UMUAHIA.

Abstract
The researcher intends to summarize briefly his research work on the effective management of Government owned Hospitality industry. The Hotel under study- Abia stat Hotels Limited, Umuahia, first started as government catering rest house in 1958. The statement of this study is to identify effective ways to manage Government owned Hospitality institutions in Nigeria and Abia state in particular. This study is focused on the Abia state hotels limited Umuahia as the only Government Hotel in the state. The findings of this study would serve as a guide to future investors on the Hospitality industry in Nigeria. It will no doubt revitalize the currently dwindling future of Hospitality industry in the country. The data for this study were collected mainly through the use of questionnaire distributed randomly. Informal interviews and observations were also employed. The analysis of data was by simply percentage and arithmetic mean. From the analysis of data, the researcher was able to find out that provision of capital. (structure, Equipment, Money etc.) or technology (technical knowhow) does not necessarily bring about development and improvement in this field. The limiting factor has been the lack of quality and vigor on the part of the management. Since the institution world-wide is service-oriented Hospitality, Institutions in Nigeria should have human face. Nigeria factors such as nepotism, favoritism, Tribalism and the likes should be de-emphasized, workers salaries should be paid as at when due, good incentives and adequate training provide. The office of the chief executive should not be politicized rather should be filled from within or with a public servant who is competent in the field. An institution succeeds almost invariably to the extent it is well managed.
