Effects of Thematic Instructional Strategy on Secondary School Students Performance in Selected Science Concepts

ABSTRACT          _

The study investigated the 'effects of thematic insl:rucnonal Strategy 0; secondary school students' performance in selected Science Concepts. Th population of the study constituted all SS 1 Students in Government Secondar Schools in Gwagwalada Area Council while two senior secondary schools wer selected to represent the sample of the study. 50 St:udent:s were randoml selected from each of the two schools; having the total of :1 00 st:udents as sampl size using simple random sampling technique. Three research questions an hypotheses respectively were formulated to guide t:he s rudy. A quasl experimental research design that made use of pre-test:, post:-test and centre group was used. Science Achievement Test (SAT) was used as the instrumen of the study. The methods of data analysis technique used herein were mean! standard deviation and the t-test. Major findings from. t:he st:udy revealed iha the use of Thematic Instructional Strategy in teaching Science Concept improved students' performance in Science than lecture rrs.e t.Ia o d. It also showe that Thematic Instructional Strategy enhanced the perfor~ance of both mal and female students by equal margin. Result further indicated that leciur method did not have any significant effect on the perfor~ance of male an female students. Sequel to the findings of the study, it: 'co a e concluded iha effective utilisation of Thematic Instructional Sl:rat:egy enhances th performance of students in Science. Based on these fin-dings, recommendation were made that Curriculum designers and planners r rt Secondary School should integrate the use of Thematic Instructional Stral:egy in teaching Sciene in Senior Secondary Schools.
