EFFECTS OF VISUAL-AIDED INSTRUCTION ON STUDENTS’ ACHIEVEMENT IN AGRICULTURE IN JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN LAFIA METROPOLIS, NASARAWA STATE

This study was designed to determine the effect of visual-aided instruction on students’ achievement in Agriculture in Junior Secondary schools. Two specific purposes, research questions and two null hypotheses guided the study. Quasi-experimental research design was adopted and the population for the study was 2,620 Junior Secondary School two (JSS2) students in Lafia metropolis, Nasarawa State, out of which 284 were sampled using purposive sampling technique. The instrument for data collection was Agriculture Achievement Test (AAT). Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics (Mean and standard deviation) to answer research questions 1 – 2, while Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) was used to test the hypotheses at p≤.05 level of significance. The study found that visual-aided method of instruction brings about better achievement than conventional chalk-talk method of instruction in Agriculture. The study also found no significant difference in achievement scores of male and female students who were taught Agriculture using visual-aided method of instruction. It was recommended that government and other stakeholders should organize workshops, seminars and conferences to encourage teachers of Agriculture in secondary schools to adopt the use of visual-aided method of instruction.
