0 CHAPTER Ol\1E 1.1 IN'[RQJ)UCTIQN Intellectual property protects application of ideas and information that are of commercial value. 1 Intellectual property therefore connotes the protection of application of ideas and information of commercial value. Ltite!lectua! property is categorised into branches dependant on the subject matter including~ copyright, patents, trademarks, passing off and industrial designs. These intellectual property laws reward the creators of most types of intellectual property by preventing others from copying, performing or distributing or othenvise dealing in those works without permission/ consent of the rights mvner. Most intellectual property rights expire after a specified period depending on the specific subject matter under consideration and the relevant legislation. This provides an opportunity for the rest of the society to benefit .from the works after the creator has had an opportunity to earn a fair reward, therefore encouraging competition that allows others to benefit from the invention as well. On one hand, protection must be strong enough to encourage authors and inventors to invest the necessary effort in innovation and on the other hand, the law must also balance the protection by allow.
