Emerging Implication of Porous Border Securitization in Kenya: A Case Study of Mandera (2013-2019)

Abstract:

This study examined the emerging implication of securitization of porous borders. It explained the threats posed by porous borders and how this has led to state actors prioritizing it as a security concern. The study also presented on how other countries have revolutionized their border control management systems to thwart the ever-evolving threats. The study was guided by the following objectives; to identify gaps and emerging challenges in the securitization measures implemented in borderland areas, to investigate border securitization measures that have been implemented to secure Kenya's boarders and to assess perception of professional local security agencies on porous border securitization measures in Mandera County. In addition, this research looked at the various challenges facing Kenya's borders and the strides the state has made in mitigating the border threats. This study used two theories namely Securitization theory and Complex interdependence theory. The study was conducted in Mandera County. The rationale behind the study was that Mandera is one of the most porous borders in the country and due to its security implication, the government has embarked on securitizing the border. Despite the governments' efforts, threats from the porous border still persist.
