ABSTRACT
This study aimed at evaluating the retention strategies in retaining teachers of public
secondary schools in Tanzania, focusing on Dodoma Municipality. The researcher used
focus group discussion combined with questionnaire, interview and documentary
review as the means of obtaining data. The sample size was 98 respondents and
Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) was used to analyze the collected data.
Furthermore, descriptive statistics summarized the information from the collected data.
From the research findings, the study revealed that high salaries, promotion, good
working environment and good policies were the most important factors for retaining
the teachers of public secondary schools in Dodoma Municipality. Again, from the
research findings, it was revealed that the failure to provide the above mentioned
requirements, resulted in poor service delivery, poor students‟ performance and hence
failure to meets the intended objectives.
Furthermore, it was found that, the employee intentions to remain within an
organization was influenced by three major groups of variables which were employee
personal characteristics, such as gender, age, position level, the nature of an employee‟s
current job and adequate working arrangements, including aspects such as salary, the
quality of current supervision, opportunities for promotion, available training, and the
quality of communication within the organization. Generally, the study recommends
that, there must be well designed policies and strategies to retain the teachers in public
secondary schools.
