Evaluation Of The Relative Difference Between The Provisions Of Bs 8110 And Eurocodes For The Design Of Reinforced Concrete Structures In Nigeria

Abstract

The conventional method of design of reinforced concrete structures commonly used in

Nigeria is the BS 8110 method. This project shO\S a comparative stud~ of BS 8110 and

Eurocode 2 for the design or reinforced concrete elements of a building Vith the aim of

determining "hich of the two codes provides the most economic design is carried out

using manual calculations. A library complex of three storey building was selected and

designed taking into account dead and live loads and assuming all :;pans to be loaded

with 4KN /m2 as the imposed load. The result of the analysis was used to design the

structural clements based on both codes using manual calculatinns. The percentage

difference hetween the areas of steel required by the two codes was calculated with the

BS 8110 co(k results as the control values and the total weight uf steel required. It ,as found that Furocodcs arc more economical than the BS codes.
