ABSTRACT
The concern about workplace bullyinghas generated substantial research studies within the European society. The need to examine the phenomenon in Nigeria has become needful given the continuous enlightenment and awareness campaigns as to the health harming effect on targets and the financial implications for organisations and the general society. Using a qualitative approach, this study explores the nature of bullying behaviour in Nigeria’s most dominant work sector, the service industry, comparing trends in the private and public sector.
Considering the scarcity of literature on the subject of workplace within the African society, this research contributes to knowledge in understanding the nature of workplace bullying in the Nigerian society and peculiar weaknesses in the employment and work structure that aid and enable such behaviour.Findings reveal the prominence of workplace bullying especially in the public sector and that culture plays a significant part in the acceptability of workplace bullying in the society. Findings also revealed that bullying targets are not likely to report bullying behaviour because of the fear of retribution as such religion is employed as a coping mechanism because jobs are scarce and social benefits do not exist to cushion the impact of unemployment.
