Factors Influencing Classroom Learning as Perceived by Students in Two Selected Nursing Schools in Enugu Metropolis

ABSTRACT This research assessed factors influencing classroom learning as perceived by students in two selected Nursing schools in Enugu Metropolis. The research specifically assessed the student nurses perception of student factors, teacher factors, the factors in the learning, environmental factors, family factors and institutional factors influencing classroom learning as well as difference in the perception of male and female student nurses in relation to factors influencing classroom learning and also compare the perception of student nurses of the two nursing institutions on factors influencing classroom learning. A cross sectional descriptive research design was adopted for the study. The sample size of 325 nursing students was involved in the study. A researcher developed questionnaire was used for data collection. The validity of the instrument was established by three experts in the Department of Nursing Sciences, University of Nigeria Enugu campus. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive (mean and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (student t test). The findings revealed lack of self motivation and poor state of health as student factors that influence learning. Poor teaching style and poor communication skills were teacher factors that influence classroom learning. Unconducive learning environment and noisy environment were environmental factors while family stress and poor financing were family factors that influenced classroom learning. There were significant difference (p < 0.05) in the student factors, teacher factors, factors in the learning task, environmental factors, family factors and institutional factors influencing classroom learning. There were no significant difference (p > 0.05) in the perception of male and female students on student factors, teacher factors, factors in the learning task, environmental and institutional factors influencing classroom learning There was significant difference (p < 0.05) in the perception of male and female students on family factors that influenced classroom learning. There was significant difference (p < 0.05) in the perception of student nurses from UNEC and UNTH on factors in the learning task that influenced classroom learning. It was concluded that student, teacher, learning task, environment, family and institutional factors respectively influence classroom learning. Based on the result, it was recommended that teachers should encourage self- motivation in students and the government should try to make the learning environment conducive for meaningful academic work.
