Factors Influencing Teachers Turnover In Public Secondary Schools In Tanzania: A Case Study Of Mbozi District Council

ABSTRACT

This study assessed the factors influencing teachers‘ turnover in public secondary schools in Tanzania taking as a case of study of Mbozi district Council, Mbeya region. The main goal was to determine the factors influencing teachers‘ turnover in public secondary schools in Mbozi district council and to highlight the magnitude of teachers‘ turnover in public secondary schools in Mbozi district council in Tanzania. Methods of Data collection used were interviews, questionnaire and direct observation of relevant documents. A total of 91respondents were involved, including 6 key informants representing Councilors and Mbozi district council employees. Data collected was analyzed by a computer programme (Statistica Package for Social Scientist (SPSS). In this analysis, data was cross-tabulated to produce percentages and frequencies of responses on performance variables. Based on the study it was found that low remuneration, poor working environment and excessive bureaucracy in regard to permission for studies and transfers were among the leading factors influencing secondary school teachers‘ turnover in public schools in Mbozi district council. As a result the attainment of the intended goal of quality education service delivery is not yet achieved properly. The study therefore recommended that there should be a well designed motivation policy as well as teachers performance tracking system to address all the above mentioned issues and serious steps to be taken to minimize the turnover rate of teachers in public secondary schools in Mbozi district council
