FACTORS RESPONSIBLE FOR UNDER UTILIZATION OF MODERN FAMILY PLANNING METHODS AMONG MOTHERS ATTENDING ANTENATAL CLIIC IN KIU-TH, BUSHENYI DISTRICT

ABSTRACT

The study aimed at determining factors responsible for underutilization of modern family

planning methods by mothers attending antenantal clinic at KIU-TH.

The study was a cross sectional retrospective, descriptive study. Different variable were

measured including awareness on modern contraception’s, level of knowledge of mothers on

modern family planning methods, perception of mothers on modern contraception’s, availability

of modern contraception’s to mothers for use and identify any cultural factors hindering the use

of modern contraception.

Study population was mothers attending antenantal clinic at KIU-TH. Sample size of 64 mothers

were considered to be adequate presentative.

Data collection tools were open and close ended questionnaire for direct interviewing, individual

interviewing and focus group discussion.

Study revealed that, 87% of mothers were aware of modern contraception methods, 23% did not

know about any method. 72% of the respondents were not using the methods while only 28%

were using. 30 of the respondents stay 1-3km away from the health centre while 18 of them stay
