FAMILY BACKGROUND AS PREDICTORS OF ADOLESCENTS’ DEPRESSION IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN OBIO/AKPOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF RIVERS STATE

ABSTRACT

The study investigated Family Background as Predictors of Adolescents Depression in Secondary Schools in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State. To guide the study, four research questions were stated. Descriptive research design was adopted for the study. The sample size for the study was 200 students drawn from the population with stratified random sampling techniques. The instruments for the study were Family Background and Depression Inventory (FBDQ). The validity of the instrument was done by the project supervisor and one specialist in measurement and evaluation while the reliability of the instruments was tested with Cronbach Alpha at 0.75. The research questions were answered with mean and standard deviation. The findings of the study show that parental education, socio-economic status, family structure to a high extent influence depression among adolescents in secondary schools in Obio/Akpor L.G.A while parenting styles to a low extent influence depression among adolescents in secondary schools in Obio/Akpor L.G.A. Finally, implication, recommendation and limitations were made for this study.
