Gas Flaring in Nigeria: What Can be Done to Curb It by Cynthia Ohaeri

GAS FLARING in Nigeria, the burning of natural gas associated with oil extraction, has been a prevalent practice. Natural gas brought to the surface, especially where there is no infrastructure to put this “associated gas” to productive use is burnt for disposal thus making it a wasteful and generally polluting practice. An economy that promotes carbon emission through flaring wastes valuable energy products, increases health disparities and fuels climate change, a far-cry from the Glob...

Drilling Cost Optimization for Extended Reach Deep Wells Using Artificial Neural Networks

Abstract Global Petroleum reserves are currently getting depleted. Most of the newly discovered oil and gas fields are found in unconventional reserves. Hence there has arisen a need to drill deeper wells in offshore locations and in unconventional reservoirs. The depth and difficulty of drilling terrains has led to drilling operations incurring higher cost due to drilling time. Rate of Penetration is dependent on the several parameters such as: rotary speed(N), Weight-On-Bit, bit state, form...

Pricing And Geopolitics In International Gas Trade …Could The Gas Exporting Countries Forum Unify Price Regimes?

ABSTRACT Market-based pricing for Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) may be less remunerative or uncertain for exporters in the evolving market. The possibility of rent-maximizing could encourage them to collude through an influence mechanism. This book examined the feasibility of Uniform Pricing (UP) or Volume Control (VC) in the Atlantic Basin and analyzed the consequences of such a development on LNG trade. So far, no existing model specifically considers the sustainability and effects of an LNG...

Pore Pressure And Fracture Gradient Assessment From Well Log Petrophysical Data Of Agbada Formation, South-East Niger-Delta

Abstract Changing down-hole conditions observed during hydrocarbon exploration can be divers. Some desired ones concern oil/gas shows while others may vary from borehole/drilling fluid association and pressure situations. Managing pressure variations and geopressure zones while drilling has been an issue of concern which has yield generic positive results over the years. However pre-pressure zones (i.e. zones above pressure zones), can display characteristics that are worthy of note in view ...

A Simple Generalized Equation of State

Abstract A pressure perturbation technique based on a simple adaptation of the Weirtheim's first order thermodynamic perturbation theory has been developed and used to formulate a generalized equation of state. The practical equation formulated was applied to pure fluids, binary systems and real samples of Niger Delta Petroleum fluids. Tuning of data is not required. The results show more accurate predictions than the commonly used SRK and PR equations This work provides a theoretical framew...

New Referencing Technique for Reservoir Oil Viscosity Estimation

Abstract Reservoir oil viscosity is important in understanding reservoir flow behaviour, l facilities design and sizing and in the computation of recovery performance, well' productivity and lift requirements. Direct viscosity measurements are expensive or sometimes unavailable hence empirical correlations are often used for predictions. However, several published correlations are either too simplistic or complex for routine operational use and improved methods continue to receive attention....

Prediction of Flowing Bottomhole Pressure In Gas-Condensate Wells

ABSTRACT Bottom-hole pressures in gas and condensate wells are frequently measured at a great cost and with operational challenges. On the other hand, most analytical estimation procedures either use trial and error or neglect liquid holdup in condensate wells. Using the mechanical energy balance approach, an approximate model was developed to estimate bottom-hole pressure from wellhead pressures in condensate wells without neglecting liquid holdup. The results show that treating gas condensa...

Prediction of the Viscosity of a Water - Base Mud treated with Cassava Starch and Potash at varying Temperatures using Factorial Design

Abstract In order to monitor and control the properties of drilling fluids, measurements are routinely made at the surface. However. these surface measurements may not be representative of down-hole properties where the desired functions of hole cleaning and other related issues are critical to the success of the drilling operations. Consequently, it is important to make necessary adjustments of the fluid properties obtained at ambient conditions to give estimate of properties at high temper...

A Study on the Efficiency of ZIF-8 Nano-Particles for Oil Spills Cleanup

This paper will aim at shedding light on the efficiency of zif-8 nano-particles. It will show that zif-8 can be a leading tool in water treatment having a large surface area, high adsorption capacity and thermal stability. Zif-8 was also used to enhance characteristics of several materials such as MF-ZIF-8 sponge composite to enhance hydrophobicity for the selective sorption of oil. Also, its treatment was studied on electrospun nylon 6,6 NFM to enhance oil spill adsorption and we compared Ni...

Analysis of Water Cresting in HorizontaI Wells

INTRODUCTION Excessive water production as result of coning and cresting has been a serious problem in the oil and gas industry. Coning or cresting are used to describe the mechanism underlying the upward movement of water and/or the downward movement of gas into the perforations of a producing well.  Efforts have been directed at understanding the mechanism of water coning/cresting in vertical and horizontal wells. These efforts have led to the development of correlations for estimating cri...

Investigate the Effect of Permeability on the Selection of Diverter in Limestone Matrix Acidizing

This paper will aim at investigating effect of permeability on selecting best diverter in carbonate matrix acidizing. Two types of diverters were used, 15% HCl Gelled Acid and Slickwater+15% HCl. Permeability varied from 50md, 100 and 300md. Results showed that 15% HCl Gelled Acid gave better results than VDA where it had lower skin value and better invasion depth.

Generalized Analysis Of The Multi-Well Interference Test In Hydrocarbon Reservoirs

ABSTRACT This study presents a generalized analytical formulation of the Multi-Well Interference test problem using the concepts of the source and sinks functions as a tool for solving the basic interference equations.

Effects of Fiscal Terms and Contractual Agreements on Government Take in Nigerian Oil Industry

ABSTRACT The effects of fiscal terms on true government take under joint petroleum ventures and production sharing contracts were investigated. A generalized cash flow model was developed and used to evaluate government revenues under different fiscal terms and contractual agreements. Analyses revealed that government take is reduced in joint ventures with divestment of equity if other fiscal terms remain unchanged.

Interfacial Tension of Crude Oil-Brine Systems in the Niger Delta

INTRODUCTION Interfacial tension between two immiscible fluids arises from the dissimilarity of the intermolecular forces between the molecules in the phases. According to Shen et al [1] Interfacial tension affects two-phase flow and displacement processes in porous media. Interfacial films could also contain ionizable groups such as asphaltenes, resins, organic acids and solids which affect the physical properties of emulsions and the solubility of some polar organic compounds at the oil-wa...

Analysis of traffic inflow to a university campus in a developing country: A rescale range approach

ABSTRACT All over the world, there is an increasing enrolment level for university admissions in view of the ever-increasing benefits of eaming university degrees. Thus, the high population of students in many universities, coupled with a high number of vehicles has made traffic control a challenge to University traffic managers. In this paper, the method of Resca1e Range Analysis (RRA) was used to estimate the Hurst Exponent Value (HEV) for the traffic inflow through the main entrance gate o...
