Nature study was a programme designed to provide knowledge in various fields of science but in reality, the content was majorly biological sciences and that of materials. This was largely because the specialists handling nature study in schools were biology teachers, who had little or no knowledge of both the chemical and physical sciences. In Africa and other parts of the world like Europe and America, Nature study was referred to as General Science, Rural Science or Hygiene based on the country and the curriculum adopted. In Nigeria, Nature Study changed to Hygiene one time, then Rural Science, later Agricultural Science and Domestic Science and then Genera Science until 1968 when NISP was initiated in Ibadan (Bajah, 1983).
