ABSTRACT The study was aimed at establishing the relationship between home nd school factors on absenteeism. It was guided by five objectives that sought to determine the demographic profile of respondents, ~ examine home and school factors related to absenteeism, investigate the rate of absenteeism and establish relationship between home and ~ school factors on absenteeism in selected primary schools in Nyamusi ivision, Nyamira county - Kenya. The study was guided by the social control theory (Hirschi 1969). The Methodology used by the researcher was descriptive survey which adopted the descriptive correlational t~yle. A random sample population generated by Slovene’s formula was 59 pupils and 28 teachers from 28 selected schools. Data was collected in October, 2012, using questionnaires and interview guides. was analyzed using percentages and averages for demographic profiles, mean ratings for home, school and absenteeism variable indicators. Findings indicated that; Majority of the respondents were males, most teachers were certificate holders, the rate of absenteeism was very high and there was a strong correlation between ome and school factors on absenteeism. It was concluded that the ~omen teacher population compared to men was more in lower primary. The home and school factors had strong relationship on absenteeism. It was recommended that male teachers be encouraged o teach in lower primary for better gender balance, Parents and eachers should ensure that homes and schools respectively have conditions that should encourage children to attend school.
