Impact of Information and Communications Technology on School Administration in Nigeria Secondary Education

Abstract:


The deficiencies associated with storage, preservation and presentation of large volumes of the information in paper form made managerial processes very cumbersome. Consequently, alternative methods provided by Information and Communications Technology (ICT) became very imperative. The study investigated the impact of ICT on school administration in Nigeria secondary education. Specifically, the study sought to: (1) determine the impact of ICT on student personnel management in Nigeria Federal Government secondary schools; (2) identify the impact of ICT on school financial management in Nigeria Federal Government secondary schools. The research design of the study was sample survey method. The population of the study comprises all the federal public secondary schools’
administrators (Principals) and school teachers in twelve (12) schools across South-East Nigeria. The population of this study comprises of the 1,934. The sample size was proximately 331. Research questions were answered using mean score and standard deviation. The hypotheses stated were tested using single regression analysis. The study revealed that ICT has significant effect on student personnel management in Federal Government secondary schools in Nigeria since ICT enhances student teaching and learning process and ICT enhances student quality and accessibility of education. Again, the study investigated that ICT has significant impact on school financial management in Federal Government secondary schools in Nigeria since ICT helps school administrators to keep account of daily monetary transactions in the school and ICT helps school administrators to keep account of services and material resources
purchased. The study concluded that there is significant positive impact of ICT on School Administration in Federal Government Secondary Schools in Nigeria. The study recommended that the government should sponsor teachers on a regular basis for ICT in-service training, seminars, workshops and conferences to update their knowledge as this will help them in their teaching and learning process and improve the level of academic performance of students.
