Impact of Internet Banking on Banker and Customer Relationship

ABSTRACT

 

Banking industry as well as relationship between banks and their customers has undergone tremendous changes with the introduction of information technology. Internet banking and electronic banking both of which are off shoot of information technology are major forms of banking adopted by banking industry.

 

Internet banking which is also known as online banking has become increasingly popular in Nigerian recent years. The reason for this popularity maybe said to be high awareness in the use of information technology coupled with introduction of global mobile system (GSM) and development of various applications which brings about competitiveness and greater trans boundary operation and effectiveness.  Internet banking has become Nigerians’ choice to conduct financial transactions.

 

Internet banking has brings about tremendous changes to the traditional banking system as well as common relationships of banker/customer. This work examines internet banking and its operation, its impact on banker –customer relationship with particular relevance to Nigeria, governing rules and guidelines, cyber-crime threat with respect to internet banking and also makes recommendation on how to further strengthen the effectiveness of internet banking on banker /customer relationship.
