IMPACT OF MOTIVATION ON EMPLOYEE PERFORMANCE IN WATER AND SANITATION SERVICES IN KENYA, HOMABAY COUNTY

Abstract

Employee performance in the water and sanitation sector is crucial for ensuring the effective delivery of essential services to communities. This study investigates the impacts of motivation on employee performance within this sector, focusing on Homabay Water and Sanitation Services (HOMAWASCO), Homa Bay County, Kenya. The research objectives are to determine the effects of rewards, incentives, and the nature of work on employee performance. Through a mixed-methods approach involving surveys, interviews, and data analysis, the study examines the perceptions and experiences of employees working in water and sanitation services at HOMAWASCO.

The findings reveal that motivation significantly influences employee performance in this sector. Rewards, including monetary incentives and non-monetary recognition, are found to positively impact employee motivation and performance. Incentive programs, such as performance-based bonuses and career advancement opportunities, also play a crucial role in driving employee engagement and productivity. Furthermore, the nature of work, characterized by factors such as task variety, autonomy, and complexity, is identified as a key determinant of employee satisfaction and performance.

These findings contribute to the existing literature on motivation and employee performance in the context of water and sanitation services, providing insights for policymakers, managers, and practitioners in the field. The study suggests the importance of implementing comprehensive motivational strategies that encompass rewards, incentives, and considerations for the nature of work to enhance employee engagement and performance. By prioritizing employee motivation and well-being, organizations can create a conducive work environment that fosters productivity, innovation, and sustainability in the water and sanitation sector.
