ABSTRACT
This study focuses on the impact of in-service training on enhancing performance of public secondary teachers in Tanzania, a case of Dodoma Municipality. It was guided by four specific objectives which were: to examine the number of secondary teachers who attend in-service training on the first five years of their service in teaching profession, to investigate the contribution of in-service training in upgrading performance of secondary teachers, to analyze the major challenges facing provision of in-service training to secondary teachers and to find out measures to be taken to solve the challenges that hamper provision of effective in-service training to secondary teachers. A sample size of fifty (50) respondents was employed so as to get relevant and reliable information concerning the study topic. Probability and non-probability sampling procedures were utilized to get this sample. Primary data and secondary data were utilized whereby field survey and interview used as method of data collection. The data was analyzed by using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS Version 24) to obtain descriptive statistics such as percentages and frequencies which are presented by using charts and tables. The investigation of this work reveals that, in-service trainings to teachers like other employees play an important role in promoting ability of teachers in delivering quality education, since enable teachers to acquire new technique and methodology of teaching, attaining of new pedagogical knowledge and skills, enable teachers to raise their morale in teaching, also play great role in building teachers confidence in teaching. Despite these contributions the study shows that INSETS are not efficiently provided to teachers. There are some challenges of allocation of insufficient funds for INSET, embezzlements of funds, favoritism in selection of trainees as well as shortage of well prepared trainers. In order to resolve this, the study also recommended that, the government should ensure there is a well organized and coordinated system that always make sure teachers are frequently attending well prepared trainings in order to have the teachers who are up to date , competent and confident in teaching career.
