ABSTRACT
This study examined the situation of infrastructure and welfare services available in the universities in South-West Nigeria vis-à-vis students' perceived motivation to learning. The study involved public universities in South-West Nigeria with different characteristics such as curriculum focus, year of establishment, ownership status and residential status. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for use and the target population for the study was the final year undergraduate students. A multi-stage, stratified and simple random sampling techniques were used to select a total of 800 students from three faculties-Education, Engineering and Sciences, and a 'college, College of Medicine. Three sets of research instruments were developed for the students while one tagged "observation/interview schedule" was used by the researcher to make on the spot assessment of the available infrastructure and welfare services.
The characteristics of the institutions sampled were analyzed while the research questions were answered using descriptive statistics like percentage, mean, standard deviation and ranking. The hypotheses were subjected to statistical measures like Pearson Product Moment Correlation Co-efficient, Independent t-test, One Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), and a two-Way Analysis of Variance (2x2 ANOVA). However, Fisher's t-test was used for post-hoc analysis of hypothesis four. All hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significances.
